Vintage Marielle Fleury Denim Rain Cape by Rainmaster 1970s Canadian Design
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a very nice quality vintage 1970s rain cape designed by Marielle Fleury for Rainmaster - Fleury is considered to have been one of the most influential Quebec designers and her designs are becoming quite sought after. The cape is made of a denim look fabric that probably is a 65% Polyester/35% Cotton blend, although I can’t know for sure. It is fully lined in purple acetate. The cape does up using six chrome buttons with buttonholes on an off-centre panel at the upper front. It has a squared, shirt-type collar and white decorative stitching. There is a long slit at either side that secure closed with a chrome button to a tab - the tab closures form openings to allow the arms to exit. There are no pockets. Label: Rainmaster by Marielle Fleury Made in Canada. Rainmaster was a trademark of Sport Togs, which hired Fleury in 1969 to design a line under her own name. The lack of a CA identification number would indicate that the cape dates to the early 1970s.
Sizing: There is no size label, but this should fit a range of medium to large sizes. Please note the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 17” across, estimated due to raglan cut
Length: 41”, measured flat
Bust: 52” around - note that this measurement has to accommodate the arms
Hips: Full - meant to hang loosely
Condition: It is in excellent condition with no wear, tear or stains, but there is some toning/colour fading to the lining, fairly minor - otherwise, this appears to have seen little, if any, use and was well cared for and stored over the years.
This is a wonderful cape - great acquisition for the Canadian fashion collector or just a very fashionable Spring rain piece!
