Antique French Christening Gown or Baptismal Robe Embroidered Cotton Eyeleting

This is a beautiful christening gown or baptismal robe made of white lawn cotton with drawn thread work, tucking, eyeleting and embroidery. It is of French origin and came from a family with deep roots - most of the items in the estate dated to the 19th century and earlier. This was probably made by a French nun or certainly by some other skilled person - the amount of intricate work on this is staggering and would have taken many, many hours to complete (please view the close-up photos). The gown is made in a long form with front panel where, aside from the bottom, bodice and sleeves, most of the work appears. It does up at the upper back with six covered buttons as well as two ties at the top edge. The piece measures 13” across the top from the edge of one cuff to the edge of the other cuff. It measures 20” around, under the arms and 20” around the waist, and has length of 41 1/2”. It is in very good condition except for a very light, small water stain at the hemline, really minor, and should come out with some bleach or other appropriate cleaning agent. Otherwise, there is no wear, tear, staining, odor or other defect.
The photos don’t do justice to this lovely antique Christening Gown - great to use for a baptism or to pose an antique doll!
