This is a wonderful vintage 1920s fashion homburg hat made by RW Forsyth of Scotland. RW Forsyth was founded in 1872 and by 1897 was successful to the point that Forsyth was able to acquire a number of properties around Renfield and Gordon streets in Glasgow, demolish them, and erect a state of the art department store. Further success allowed Forsyth to expand to a second store on Princes Street in Edinburgh, where this hat was originally purchased.
The hat is made in an excellent quality fur felt. The brim is turned up at the edge and finished in grosgrain. The crown has a black grosgrain band around its base with a bow at the left side. The sweatband is stamped “R.W. Forsyth Ltd Glasgow & Edinburgh”. The lining is printed at the top with “R.W. Forsyth Limited Hatters Princes Street Edinburgh and Glasgow”. It is estimated as a size 7 1/8 - it measures 22 1/8” around the sweat band and 8” by 6 1/2” across the opening. The brim measures 2” in width and the crown measures 5 1/2” in height. The hat is in very good condition - some slight soiling to the sweatband, but otherwise, very crisp and clean on the exterior. This is a great looking homburg, not common due to its age and origin, sure to be noticed....
