Produced during the Second World War era, this original Raphael Tuck & Sons "Relief Scraps" sheet illustrates the flags of Britain, the Commonwealth and nations from around the world at a fascinating moment in twentieth-century history. Printed in England and intended for use in scrapbooks, greeting cards, school projects and decorative crafts, these colourful embossed die-cut sheets were among Raphael Tuck's most popular paper novelties and today survive far less frequently in complete, unused condition. It should be noted that the Tuck building was destroyed during the 1940 Blitz, but they re-built and continued to produce Relief Scraps until the early 50s.

The sheet is Series No. R21 and features 32 embossed die-cut flags representing nations and territories from around the world. Included are the flags of Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Ceylon, Burma, Egypt, France, Greece, Brazil, Mexico, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Switzerland, Argentina, Turkey, the Netherlands, Italy, Wales, Scotland and the United States, together with British service and maritime flags including the Royal Air Force Flag, The Royal Standard, White Ensign, Blue Ensign and Red Ensign.

The flags themselves provide an excellent guide to dating the sheet. The use of the 48-star United States flag, the designation "Eire" for Ireland, together with the pre-independence flags of India, Burma and Ceylon, places production within the period circa 1939–1945, making it a wonderful piece of wartime Commonwealth and patriotic paper ephemera.

Raphael Tuck & Sons was one of Britain's premier publishers of illustrated postcards, children's books and paper novelties from the late nineteenth century onward. Their Relief Scraps were known for their vibrant colours, fine printing and quality embossing, and were exported throughout the British Empire and beyond.

The sheet measures 7 inches by 9 3/4 inches.

Condition

Very good unused condition. The die-cut pieces remain unpunched and attached within the original sheet. Colours remain bright and attractive with only light age toning to the surrounding card. The sheet is housed in a protective plastic sleeve.
