WWI CEF Book With The First Contingent Canadian Military Published 1915 Mary Plummer
This is a book titled “With the First Contingent” published in aid of the funds of the Canadian Field Comforts Commission. The Canadian Field Comforts Commission was appointed by the Canadian government to distribute clothing and other items of need to the troops stationed in Europe and at the front during WWI. The introduction is written by Mary Plummer, a voluntary officer who was instrumental in establishing the CFCC. The book consists of 119 pages plus hard cover and measures 7 1/2” by 10”. It retains its original dust cover, although there is edge tearing to the dust cover, primarily to the top front, as well as some moisture staining to the lower spine area. The cloth covered hard cover is very clean while the interior is intact, but there are some foxing spots, mostly to the first pages, and some visible to the page edges. The book is full of tipped in photographic prints as well as printed photos. There is an insert still present explaining the Canadian Field Comforts Commission mission. The book was printed in England for Hodder & Stoughton Limited and The Musson Book Company of Toronto. The book would grade as “Very Good” while the dust jacket would grade “Good”, but remains an important historical account of the First Contingent’s training on Salisbury plain and early experiences in France…
