Antique W.H. Grindley Celtic Flow Blue Covered Vegetable Bowl / Lidded Serving Dish c.1897
This antique covered vegetable serving bowl was made by English pottery maker W.H. Grindley & Co. in their sought-after “Celtic” flow blue pattern, introduced in 1897. The piece features richly blurred cobalt blue decoration against a white ground with delicate gilt highlighting along the moulded edges and handles. The flowing floral and scroll motif is framed by a textured border, giving the piece a distinctly late Victorian / Edwardian aesthetic.
The bowl stands on an ornate moulded foot and retains its original fitted lid with matching decoration and finial handle. Flow blue ceramics like this were created by allowing the cobalt decoration to intentionally “flow” or blur during firing, creating the soft atmospheric appearance collectors admire today.
This example forms part of a large matching Grindley Celtic service recently acquired.

Condition
The lid is in excellent original condition with only light wear to the gold accenting consistent with age. The bowl has a repair to the interior upper rim edge (shown in photos). There are also a few small areas of glaze discolouration / staining along sections of the upper rim. The close-up photos of the damage make it look worse that under normal viewing, however the damage is present. Despite this, the piece still displays beautifully and remains highly decorative.
