Vintage Cardinal men's charcoal grey Kynoch herringbone wool overcoat, size 44R, full front view

Vintage Kynoch Herringbone Wool Men's Overcoat Cardinal Canada 44R

$195.00

A vintage men's overcoat, manufactured in Canada by Cardinal of Montreal using fine 100% wool herringbone fabric by Kynoch of Keith, Scotland. Dating most likely to the 1980s or early 1990s, the coat features traditional British-inspired tailoring, a generous full-length silhouette and a sophisticated charcoal grey and black herringbone pattern.

The fabric is particularly attractive, with a closely woven, finely defined herringbone pattern in contrasting shades of charcoal grey and black. The subtle zigzag weave creates a rich, textured appearance while maintaining a restrained, classic look.

Design & Tailoring

The overcoat features a single-breasted front with three matching grey buttons, broad notched lapels, a neatly shaped breast pocket and two lower flap pockets.

The shoulders are structured with padding, and the coat has a generous cut through the chest and body, designed to accommodate a suit or jacket underneath.

The sleeves are finished with four small matching buttons at each cuff. At the back, a long centre vent provides ease of movement and contributes to the coat's elegant, tailored silhouette.

The interior is fully lined in smooth black 100% acetate, with a satin-like finish. The lining extends throughout the body and sleeves.

Kynoch of Scotland & Cardinal of Montreal

The woven label reads Kynoch / Keith / Scotland, identifying the Scottish textile manufacturer responsible for the wool fabric.

Kynoch was associated with the tradition of fine Scottish woollen cloth production, and its fabrics were used in quality tailored garments.

The coat was manufactured by Cardinal of Montreal, a Canadian outerwear manufacturer whose history dates to 1938. Cardinal specialized in quality men's overcoats and topcoats, including garments fashioned in cashmere and other fine woollen fabrics.

The Canadian textile identification number CA 00292 is assigned to Cardinal.

The coat also bears an ACTWU/TAVT union label, identifying it as a union-made Canadian garment. The Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union operated under that name from 1976 to 1995, supporting a late-1970s-to-mid-1990s manufacturing period.

The manufacturer's label identifies the model as SB TOWN, with a tagged size of 44 Regular.

The interior also bears an EATON label, indicating that the overcoat was retailed through Eaton's, the historic Canadian department store.
