This is a wonderful 1970s era three piece striped suit made in England by Frank Usher of London. Frank Usher, although existing previously but having gone defunct, was resurrected in 1945 by Max and Anne Bruh who, due to Britain’s post-war economy, focused on using high fashion designer dresses as inspiration for more moderately priced models offered under the Frank Usher label. Designers such as Christian Dior and Ossie Clark were copied and by the late 60s, the Frank Usher label had become very popular, especially subsequent to the late 60s movie Blazes Away starring Dame Maggie Smith, which featured wardrobe designed by Frank Usher.
This outfit would have been made at the height of Frank Usher’s popularity, during the 1970s. It consists of a sleeveless ribbed top with trim that matches the skirt and jacket, a maxi length skirt constructed to flare out to the hemline and an oversized jacket with raglan style incorporated sleeve with only the cuff emerging from the body and the most wonderful back (see photos). All pieces are unlined and the top and skirt close with a zipper while the jacket has no closure. The skirt has a pocket built into either side and has belt loops, but no belt is included.
Label: Frank Usher London Made in England. Care label reads “Commercial Dry Clean Remove Trim”
Color: Tones of green, blue, red, white and black
Material: There is no content label, but my guess would be an acrylic top and the striped material would be some type of viscose rayon
Sizing: Size 38 is indicated, which should be equivalent to a US size 10, but please rely on the following measurements for fit, keeping the style of the garment in mind (please measure your body or a similar garment that you might own for comparison):
Bust: 36” unstretched, but stretches out if needed
Waist: 28” unstretched, but stretches out if needed
Length: 21” measured flat
Sleeve: 26” from the mid-neck seam along the side to the edge of the cuff
Bust: 58” around, but this would have to accommodate the arms as well as the torso
Length: 26” measured flat
Hips: 44”, meant to fall loosely
Hemline: 160” around - note the extreme flare!
Condition: This Frank Usher suit is in very clean condition with no wear, tear, soiling, stains or odors. It looks to have seen little use and has been very well stored over the years.
This is a very nice example of Frank Usher design - striking striped pattern and fabulous style!
