This vintage 1970s Aristos of London chenille coat from Carnaby Street is an iconic example of London boutique fashion from the early Ariella period. Made in a textured black, grey, and white striped chenille fabric, this belted coat could maybe be worn as a dress by maybe adding additional closures  note that wearing long gloves works well with the shorter length sleeves.  This garment represents collectible Carnaby Street designer fashion from the height of the London fashion revolution.

Description

This is a vintage early 1970s chenille coat by Aristos of London, from the designer’s Carnaby Street boutique during the height of London’s mod and post-mod fashion movement. Aristos Constantinou was known for developing a distinctive chenille fabric used for coats, jackets, and skirts in tonal striped patterns, which became strongly associated with Carnaby Street fashion of the period.

The fabric features diagonal striping in black, grey, and white in a textured chenille weave that gives the garment structure and visual depth. The coat features a large black chenille pointed collar and wide over-the-elbow sleeves typical of early 1970s London fashion. It closes at the waist with a single covered button and is secured with the original matching belt. The skirt is cut with a gentle flare, allowing the garment to be worn either as a dress (with or without modifications) or as a light coat.

The interior is lined in black rayon acetate.

Aristos later became Ariella London, which remains in business today, and garments from the Carnaby Street Aristos period are considered collectible examples of early 1970s London boutique fashion.
