Vintage 1950s Taffeta Dress Gown Owned by Miss Canada 1954

Vintage 1950s Taffeta Dress Gown Owned by Miss Canada 1954

$750.00

This exceptional vintage 1950s taffeta dress carries a wonderful provenance — it was owned by Barbara Joan Markham, Miss Canada of 1954. That year, Miss Canada contestants were eligible to compete in the Miss America pageant, and Miss Markham represented her country with distinction, placing 12th in the competition.

The dress features a fitted bodice with a V-neckline and an asymmetrical buttoned front that curves into the waist. The skirt is full and gathered, accentuated by a lavish draped bow detail at the hip — a hallmark of couture-inspired evening design from this era.

The long sleeves are cut with a raglan shoulder, while the nipped waist and voluminous skirt create a classic hourglass shape. The fabric’s crisp texture and sheen capture the light beautifully.  There is no label, but this was likely made for her for use in her official capacity - definitely expertly made.

Sizing:  no label as it was custom made, and although this should fit a medium size, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 17” across (estimated due to raglan sleeve)
Sleeves: 24 1/2” from estimated shoulder / 33” from mid-neck to cuff
Sleeve inseam: 20 1/2”
Bust: 40” around
Waist: 31” around
Hips: Full
Length: 49” from back neck seam to hem

Material: Taffeta (likely silk)
Colour: Turquoise blue
Condition: Excellent condition — clean and well preserved with no pronounced wear or noted defect. The fabric retains its sheen, with strong structure and intact seams.

A one-of-a-kind piece of Canadian fashion history — this both wearable and collectible!
