Vintage 1940s Fred Gray attributed flying bird brooch

Vintage 1940s Fred Gray Attributed Bird Brooch S-in-Star Mark

$110.00

This is a vintage figural bird brooch dating to approximately the 1940s, attributed to the Fred Gray Corp.

The brooch depicts a stylized bird in flight with outstretched wings and tail feathers. It is made in gold-coloured metal with deep maroon red enamel highlighting the head, wings and tail. The body is set with a large oval opaque red plastic cabochon, providing a focal point to the design. I have not tested the plastic and therefore am not identifying it as Bakelite or Catalin.

The gold-coloured portions of the wings and body have an embossed and textured surface, adding considerable detail to the design. A small topaz-coloured rhinestone forms the bird's eye.

The reverse is marked with an “S” within a five-pointed star. This mark has been associated with the Fred Gray Corp.; examples bearing the mark have been found on original Fred Gray Corp. cards, and a bird brooch has been documented bearing both the S-in-a-star mark and Fred Gray Corp. identification. However, research sources caution that pieces bearing only the S-in-a-star mark cannot be conclusively identified as Fred Gray, so this brooch is described as attributed to Fred Gray Corp. rather than definitively identified as its manufacture.

The brooch is fitted with a long pin stem and clasp on the reverse.

Measurements: approximately 3 1/4" wide × 2 3/4" high.

Condition: Very good condition with no notable wear. The large red plastic cabochon remains securely set. Please refer closely to the photographs for condition.

A nice example of 1940s figural costume jewellery, with a dramatic flying-bird design that is sure to be noticed.
