Vintage Royal Doulton Sir John Falstaff Toby Jug D6062 8328 England

This is a large vintage Royal Doulton Sir John Falstaff Toby jug, model D6062 / 8328, made in England and dating to the mid-20th century.

The jug depicts Sir John Falstaff, one of William Shakespeare's best-known comic characters. Falstaff appears principally in Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2 and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Falstaff is portrayed as a jovial, portly gentleman seated with his legs apart, wearing a deep burgundy coat and plumed hat, brown boots and a sword suspended at his side. He holds a large tankard in one hand and a smaller drinking vessel in the other, an appropriately convivial portrayal of Shakespeare's famous knight.

The figure was originally modelled by Charles Noke, with Falstaff's large curled moustache, grey beard, expressive eyes and rosy complexion individually picked out beneath the glossy glaze. The rich burgundy of his clothing contrasts nicely with the black, brown, grey and cream details.

This is the large full-figure Toby jug, rather than Royal Doulton's smaller Falstaff character jug. It is made of glazed earthenware and the underside bears the Royal Doulton lion-and-crown backstamp with “Made in England”, together with the printed name “Sir John Falstaff.”

It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs.
