Edwardian Tambour Embroidered Net Lace Capelet Bertha Collar c.1905–1910
This is an authentic Edwardian tambour embroidered net lace capelet dating to the 1905–1910 period. It is made of fine ivory machine-made hexagonal net that is hand-embroidered using the tambour technique, creating raised chain-stitched floral motifs throughout. The design features dense floral sprays, leafy scrolls, and a scalloped embroidered edge, all characteristic of early 20th century lacework.
The capelet is shaped to drape over the shoulders with a collar, rounded front and softly flaring back, a style commonly referred to as a Bertha collar or lace capelet. These pieces were worn over blouses or evening bodices during the Edwardian era as decorative shoulder coverings.
The lace has aged to a soft ivory tone and displays the light oxidation typical of antique cotton lace. It is in very good condition for its age with no major flaws noted, just a tiny brown stain, shown in the last photo, and which I haven’t tried to remove. Measurements:
• Top seam to which the collar is attached: 15”
• Depth at back: 15”
Condition: Excellent condition with age-appropriate patina and tiny stain.
This is a gorgeous piece of handwork on net - beautiful lace capelet!
