EAPG Ulysses S Grant Commemorative Plate Clear Pressed Glass 1885 Memorial Let Us Have Peace
This an EAPG Ulysses S Grant commemorative plate was issued upon his death in 1885. The plate features a central moulded portrait of Grant in military attire, encircled by the inscription:
“Born April 27 1822 – Died July 23 1885.”
The broad rim is richly decorated with overlapping maple leaves in high relief, with raised block lettering reading:
“LET US HAVE PEACE – U.S. GRANT”
The phrase, drawn from Grant’s 1868 presidential campaign slogan, adds strong historical significance to the piece.
While the maker remains unconfirmed, examples are often attributed to either Gillinder & Sons or Adams & Company, both prominent American pressed glass manufacturers of the period. The pattern is most commonly seen in blue, green, or yellow pressed glass; the clear version is seen far less frequently. The glass is old and original as it glows slightly green under an ultraviolet light.
