Antique Edwardian Burgundy Velvet Handbag c.1900–1915 with Leather Coin Purse

$185.00

This is a wonderful surviving example of an antique Edwardian handbag, dating most likely to 1900–1915, fashioned in rich burgundy red velvet with a silver-coloured metal frame, distinctive ball clasp and short leather carrying handle.

The handbag has an elegant, softly rounded rectangular shape, with a structured frame and substantial construction characteristic of the early 20th century. The deep burgundy velvet has a rich, plush appearance, while the curved sides give the bag an attractive, architectural silhouette.

The silver-coloured metal frame is particularly interesting, featuring a spherical kiss-lock clasp with a diagonally ribbed centre band, flanked by two smaller metal spheres. The frame is stamped PATENTED, although no maker's name or additional identifying marks have been found.

A short, curved leather handle is attached to the frame with metal fittings. The handle has considerable surface wear but remains attached.

An unusual feature is the large exterior pocket incorporated into the back of the handbag. This pocket extends across the width of the bag and has a shaped upper edge, making it both practical and visually distinctive.

The interior is lined in tan fabric and features a structured compartment with gathered side gussets. The lining is clean and has survived remarkably well.

An additional antique leather change purse was found inside the handbag and is included. This small purse is fashioned in dark, heavily textured leather with a brass-coloured metal frame and simple ball clasp. Its interior is lined in tan fabric. Measuring just 2" × 2 1/2", it is a charming accessory in its own right.

Dating

Based on the handbag's construction, metal frame, clasp, leather handle and overall design, it is believed to date to the Edwardian period, approximately 1900–1915, although a slightly earlier or later date cannot be entirely excluded.

The styling and practical construction are characteristic of handbags from the turn of the 20th century, before the smaller, more decorative evening bags that became fashionable during the 1920s.

Condition

The handbag is in very good antique condition considering its age, although it exhibits signs of wear and long-term storage.

The burgundy velvet retains much of its original richness, with some surface marking and areas where the pile has been disturbed, including one tiny area of loss on the back. There is a noticeable impression where the leather handle rested against the velvet for many years, along with scattered splatter marks on one side.

There is also a round stain on the underside of the handbag.

The leather handle shows considerable age-related deterioration, including surface cracking, abrasion and areas of leather loss, particularly near the metal attachments. It remains attached but should be handled with care.

The metal frame shows age-related patina.

The interior is clean and well preserved, with the original lining and construction remaining intact.

The accompanying leather change purse exhibits slight surface wear to the leather and wear to its metal frame.

Despite these condition issues, this is an appealing survivor from the early 20th century, retaining its original character and many distinctive period details.

A wonderful addition to an antique handbag or historical fashion collection!
