This is an exceptional vintage smoking jacket made of an Asian pattern brocade fabric with maroon coloured satin trim. Among the Asian motifs present in the pattern are cranes, pagodas and tigers. This vintage smoking jacket has a wide shawl collar and a pocket at the left chest and at either side, all trimmed in maroon satin and edged in maroon and white striped roping - the sleeve cuffs are similarly trimmed. It cinches at the waist with a matching rope belt that has a fringed tassel at either side. The jacket is fully lined in an off-white fabric.
Age: 1940s, maybe early 1950s
Label: Best Quality New Look
Colours: Beige with gold, green, black and blue
Sizing: Size M (medium) is indicated on this vintage smoking jacket, and although it probably fits about a US size 40, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 18 3/4” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 25” long
Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2”
Chest: 46”, taken under the arms and depending on overlap
Waist: 48” around, but meant to be cinched with the belt
Overall length: 31 1/4“ measured flat at the back from the neck seam
Condition: This vintage smoking jacket is in very clean condition on the exterior except for a some light marks on the right lapel (see last close-up photo). The lining has discolouration through the upper middle back. I haven’t tried to treat either of these issues as the exterior ones are really minor and the interior discolouration isn’t visible when the jacket is being worn. Otherwise, this vintage smoking jacket has been very well preserved and is quite crisp - it presents itself very well.
This is a great example of a 1940s era vintage smoking jacket - fabulous brocade fabric!
