1928 Charlevoix Quebec Folk Art Wood Carving – Murray Bay Flat Plane Figure with Hen
This is a Charlevoix Quebec folk art carving depicting a rural woman holding a hen and chicks, hand carved in the flat-plane tradition. The underside of the base is inscribed “Murray Bay Juin 30 1928”. Murray Bay (now La Malbaie) was well known for locally made wood carvings sold to visitors during this period.
The figure is carved from a single block of wood with an integrated base, showing confident tool work, expressive facial modelling, and carefully observed details in the clothing and animals. Subtle original surface colour remains, consistent with early Charlevoix folk carving rather than later painted souvenir pieces.
While no maker’s name is present, the carving is confidently attributed to an independent Charlevoix folk carver, predating the formalization of the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli carving school.
