Original 1910 Bournemouth, Exeter & Plymouth Bioscope Theatres Letter – Documenting the Birth of an Early British Cinema Company

As permanent motion picture theatres were transforming entertainment across Britain, the company was actively raising capital to establish and develop purpose-built bioscope theatres, making this an exceptional survivor from the dawn of commercial cinema.
A fascinating original letter from the pioneering days of British cinema, written on the letterhead of The Bournemouth, Exeter and Plymouth Bioscope Theatres Limited and dated 21 October 1910. Issued only a few years after permanent motion picture theatres began appearing throughout Britain, the letter documents the business affairs of one of the country's early regional cinema companies during the rapid expansion of the new film industry.
Incorporated under the Companies (Consolidation) Act of 1908, Bournemouth, Exeter and Plymouth Bioscope Theatres Limited was established to develop and operate purpose-built electric bioscope theatres throughout southwest England. Among its best-known venues was the Empire Electric Theatre in Exeter, an intimate cinema seating approximately 230 patrons during a period when dedicated motion picture theatres were still a novelty. The company formed part of the first generation of British cinema enterprises that helped transform moving pictures from travelling fairground attractions into permanent entertainment venues.
Typed on the company's letterhead, the correspondence is addressed to J. W. Rogers of Southampton regarding the return of his £200 allotment letter and advises him to retain it until his share certificate is received. The acting secretary further notes Rogers' intention to subscribe for an additional £400 in shares, enclosing the appropriate application form. As such, the letter provides a contemporary record of the company's efforts to raise capital while expanding its early cinema operations.
The heading includes the company's London registered offices at Mansion House Chambers, London, E.C., together with its telephone number, telegraph address and secretary, Henry Setchell. The letter is signed in ink by the Acting Secretary, adding to its authenticity.
Measuring 8 1/4 inches by 10 1/4 inches, the document is printed on a single sheet with the original typed text and signature.
Condition
Very good condition overall. The paper displays light overall age toning with the expected horizontal and vertical mailing folds. There is some gentle wrinkling from handling and a few minor marks consistent with age, but the paper remains clean and highly presentable. There are three or four punch holes through the centre, likely the result of the letter having been filed in a company or investor's folder. The typed text, company letterhead and original ink signature remain crisp and legible throughout, with only a small amount of text affected by the filing holes.
