Illustrated Victorian sheet music combines music, literature and graphic art into a single collectible, and few examples capture all three as effectively as this 1872 edition of Nobody's Treasure. Featuring a beautifully rendered cover signed by J. E. Baker—almost certainly the American illustrator Joseph Edwin Baker (1837–1914), celebrated for his portrait of Abraham Lincoln and numerous Civil War-era illustrations—this scarce publication is an outstanding example of nineteenth-century American lithographic design and sentimental music publishing.

An original 1872 first edition of the Victorian song Nobody's Treasure, with words by Frank Dumont and music by John S. Cox, published by G. D. Russell & Company of Boston. The striking cover illustration is signed J. E. Baker, almost certainly Joseph Edwin Baker (1837–1914), the noted American illustrator remembered for his portrait of Abraham Lincoln and numerous Civil War-era cartoons, magazine illustrations and engraved book plates.

The beautifully executed monochrome lithograph depicts a young barefoot girl struggling through a winter snowstorm while reaching toward a small dog, creating a poignant visual interpretation of the song's title. Baker's atmospheric use of light, texture and movement makes this one of the more memorable examples of American illustrated sheet music from the early 1870s.

Frank Dumont was a well-known minstrel performer, playwright and songwriter, while composer John S. Cox collaborated on a number of popular nineteenth-century songs. The piece was entered according to the Act of Congress in 1872 and reflects the sentimental Victorian ballads that dominated American parlour music during the period.

Condition

The sheet music remains in very good antique condition. There is light overall age toning with scattered foxing and minor handling wear. Small edge tears and light creasing are present along the margins. There are a few unobtrusive pencil notations on the front cover, together with a period ownership signature. The interior music pages are clean and fully legible, with the binding remaining secure.

An attractive and increasingly scarce example of illustrated Victorian sheet music, combining a moving nineteenth-century sentimental composition with an evocative signed cover by Joseph Edwin Baker. It would make an excellent addition to collections of nineteenth-century music, Civil War-era illustration, Victorian ephemera or American lithographic art.
