This is a fabulous mens vintage smoking jacket with a woven pattern consisting of a man in a top hat gesturing with his finger and a smoking calabash pipe, the type favoured by Sherlock Holmes. The pattern is in black against an orangey red satin background - the colour looks slightly different under different lighting. This smoking jacket has pads in the shoulders, a fairly wide shawl collar and has a patch pocket at the left chest and at either side. The sleeves have turned cuffs. The smoking jacket is unlined. It cinches closed with a black satin sash belt that is a replacement belt - not ideal, but the original belt was missing.
Age: 1940s
Label: Sportswear by Pioneer Grover’s Montreal. Grover’s was a Montreal based manufacturer founded in 1925 that also had a chain of retail clothing stores for men.
Material: Probably rayon satin
Sizing: No size is indicated on this smoking jacket, and although this should fit a medium size, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 19” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 25” long
Sleeve Inseam: 17” long
Chest: 44”, taken under the arms and depending on overlap
Waist: 44” around, but meant to be cinched
Overall length: 35“, measured flat
Condition: This smoking jacket is in very good condition except for a little soiling on the label and a couple of small “picks” in one place on the middle back, really nothing (see last close-up photo). Regarding the replacement belt, you could make a belt by cutting a piece off of the bottom thereby shortening the robe or you could put in buttons and buttonholes instead of using a belt. Or, you could just use the black replacement belt.
This is a fabulous example of a vintage 40s men’s smoking jacket -wonderful Sherlock Holmes smoking jacket pattern in a striking colour!
