Vintage RCMP Stetson Hat Canadian Mounties Dated 1968 Size 7
This is a vintage RCMP Stetson hat. The sweatband is stamped “R.C.M.P.” and with the contract date of February 1968. The hat was made at the Brockville, Ontario Stetson factory, which was opened as the Wolthausen Hat Corporation in 1902 and acquired by Stetson in 1935. the first Stetson factory outside of the US - it closed in 1970, so this hat would have been amongst the last of the RCMP hats produced there. The history of the RCMP Stetson is interesting. During the 19th century, the official headwear was the pith helmet, but the members of the force preferred the Montana Peak Stetson due to the shade and protection from the rain afforded by the brim. Because it was unofficial officers would have to purchase the hat themselves. By 1904. it became an official hat of the RCMP and the first contract was awarded to Christy and Company of London - eventually Stetson became an official supplier.
Sizing: Size 7 is indicated - the sweatband measures 22” around and the brim has a width of 3 1/2”
Condition: Other than two tiny edge chips to the leather band, this vintage RCMP Stetson is in very good condition with no pronounced wear and retains its leather strap.
The quality of the felt is far superior to what they now produce - excellent balance between stiffness and flexibility.
This is a wonderful example, not easy to find - iconic Canadian!
