Vintage Porcupine Quill Birch Bark Box with Bear Motif Anishinaabe Indigenous Quillwork Canada c. 1950s

Vintage Porcupine Quill Birch Bark Box with Bear Motif Anishinaabe Indigenous Quillwork Canada c. 1950s

$275.00

This is a vintage porcupine quill–decorated birch bark box, hand-made using traditional Indigenous woodland techniques and featuring a stylized bear motif on the lid.

The box is constructed from folded birch bark with stitched seams and a reinforced base. The lid is decorated with flattened, dyed porcupine quills arranged to form a bear standing on green ground on a pale background. The quills are carefully laid in parallel rows to create a pictorial design rather than a geometric pattern. A narrow wrapped sweetgrass band encircles the body near the lid edge.

Based on the materials, construction, and pictorial quillwork style, this piece is most consistent with Anishinaabe (Algonquian woodland), most likely Ojibwe, traditions of central Canada. Bear imagery is especially prominent within Anishinaabe visual culture and appears frequently in mid-20th-century quillwork and beadwork made for personal use and limited trade.

Boxes of this form were commonly used as small personal storage containers, sometimes described as needle, trinket, or keepsake boxes. No claim of ceremonial or sacred use is made.

Attribution & Dating

Cultural attribution: Indigenous, Algonquian woodland tradition

Likely cultural group: Anishinaabe (Ojibwe-related)

Probable region: Ontario or western Quebec, Canada

Estimated date: circa 1950s–1970s

Dating rationale:  Pictorial porcupine quillwork of this type became less common after the mid-20th century as beadwork increasingly replaced quills for representational imagery. The colour palette, compact format, and construction methods are consistent with mid-century examples rather than later tourist-market production.
