SOLD - Vintage Mary Maxim Cowichan Sweaters for Father & Son Sailing Time Boat Pattern

This is a wonderful pair of vintage Mary Maxim “father and son” sweaters featuring a sailing boat / nautical theme that I believe was called “Sailing Time” by Mary Maxim.  Mary Maxim was an Ontario, Canada firm that expanded into the United States in 1956.  They were known for their high quality knitting yarns and sweater designs.  The pattern on this sweater is well documented as a Mary Maxim design.  It’s really wonderful, with sea gulls and sailing boats across the front and on the back, a steering wheel on each arm and a loop design along the bottom of the sweater.  I believe that these sweaters were never used as they have no zippers and are in excellent condition - the original knitter never completed the sweaters by attaching zippers.  The sweaters can be used as is, or you could have zippers attached to them.  Each sweater has a high set rounded collar.  There are two shallow pockets built into the lower front.  These types of sweaters are called Cowichans after a British Columbia native tribe called the Salish who live in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.  They are also referred to as curling sweaters in Canada.

Sizing: No size is indicated, but the larger sweater is a medium to large size, depending on if you like your sweaters loose, probably would fit a mens size 40 / 42 short. In any case, please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Adult sweater:

Shoulders: 18” across, from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves: 25” long from the estimated shoulder

Sleeve Inseam: 16 1/2” long

Chest: 46” around, taken under the arms

Waist: 44” around

Overall length: 29", measured flat

Adolescent Sweater:

Shoulders: 16” across, from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves: 22” long from the estimated shoulder

Sleeve Inseam: 13” long

Chest: 36” around, taken under the arms

Waist: 34” around

Overall length: 25", measured flat

This is a hard to find set - unusual that these were unfinished and unused.  Cute pair of sweaters for a family outing.......
