This is a wonderful 1930s corde handbag purse featuring a rarely seen art deco multicoloured cordé embroidery pattern.  Cordé purses were made on the Cornely-Bonnaz embroidery machine, invented in 1865 and originally used to produce primarily curtain trim.  It appears to have first been used for purse decoration during the late 1920s, often in multiple colours, like this example.  Cordé increased in popularity during the mid-30s and by 1940 was very common.  The frame of this 1930s corde handbag is stamped in two places with Jemco within a diamond and with three different US patent numbers.  Jemco was the trademark of the J.E. Mergott Co. Of New York.  Jemco appears to have been used as a trademark from 1889 until 1950 when Mergott was acquired by the Fedders-Quigan company. The multicoloured art deco patterning on this handbag makes me feel that it is a 1930s example.  It has a double ball gold toned metal clasp and a faille grosgrain cloth double handle. The interior of this 1930s corde handbag is lined in a blue taffeta fabric and has a mirror pocket built onto one side.  There had been a change purse attached to a cord, but it is missing and only the cord remains (see last close-up photo).  This 1930s corde handbag measures 11 1/2” in width and 7” in height, excluding the clasp - the handle has a drop of 5 1/2”.  This 1930s corde handbag is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, staining or other defect - a bit of wear to the interior metal frame, interior lining is clean.  Fabulous multicoloured example of a 1930s corde handbag - great addition to a collection!
