Vintage Japanese Moriage Teapot Blue Dragonware 5 Cup Capacity
$95.00
Brand Etsy
This is a vintage Dragonware teapot decorated with moriage (raised slip). This is a larger example with a 4 to 5 cup capacity (5 cups close to the top brim) - it measures 7 3/4 in height to the top of the dragon head finial. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or pronounced wear - a bit of blue paint and gold paint wear and a tiny bit of slip (moriage) missing at the back (see photo), very minor. Also, there is a short firing fissure to the interior rim, again really negligible. This type of moriage dragonware was produced in Japan from the late 1930s into the 1950s. The bottom of this teapot has a lithophane - an impressed image visible with light behind it, however, I cannot make out what it is supposed to be. It is stamped in red on its underside with Made in Japan.
This is a wonderful teapot - one sees the smaller versions (6) but these larger examples are harder to come by..
