This is a hand knit sweater jacket, very much like a vintage cowichan but without the zipper closure. The cowichan actually pre-dates zippers, so peg buttons may not be so unusual after all. This vintage cowichan is made in a cream white tone with orange trim. The sweater does up with six painted plastic pegs and corresponding buttonholes. It has a rounded shawl collar, raglan sleeves and there is an orange pocket at either lower front side. It is unlined. The wool is quite thick and tightly knitted, so this sweater should provide good warmth. Because it is hand knit, it is difficult to date precisely, but I would think that it dates to the 1950s. These types of vintage cowichan sweaters are generically named after a British Columbia native tribe called the Salish who live in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island on whose designs they are based. Cowichan sweater are also referred to as curling sweaters in Canada. The buttons are on the right side, so the sweater was probably meant for a man, although this could be easily used by a woman.
Sizing: No size is indicated on this vintage cowichan sweater, and although this appears to be a mens small size, please rely on the following measurements for fit, noting the stretch of the knit:
Shoulders: 16” across, estimated due to the raglan sleeve
Sleeves: 25” long from the estimated shoulder, 33” from the mid-neck to the cuff
Sleeve Inseam: 19” long
Chest: 39” around, taken under the arms
Bottom: 40” around, unstretched
Overall length: 26”, measured flat
Condition: This vintage cowichan sweater is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, soiling or odour
This is a great looking original 1950s vintage Cowichan sweater - attractive orange and cream white combination!
