This is a vintage Chinese childs hat featuring embroidery by a member of the Miao ethnic minority, perhaps a member of the Hmong tribal affiliation. This type of hat is called a “tiger hat as they were traditionally made to look like tiger heads in order to make the child appear fearsome, thereby keeping predators at bay. This example is an older example, but probably not older than the 1940s or 50s. The hat features a quite intricate embroidered design, incorporating turtles (or maybe dragons), birds, flowers and other foliate motifs. The front edge of the hat has seven silver ornaments across it representing the 88 Buddhas and the back has a silver butterfly with three bells hanging by chains from it, also meant to scare away evil spirits and bestow good luck upon the wearer. The exterior is entirely made of silk while the interior is made of checked wool.
Condition: It is in very good condition with some light soiling or marking to the silk, really quite negligible and understandable given that this was a piece that was used.
This is a wonderful collectible piece of Chinese folk art....beautiful silk embroidery....
