Vintage Artisan Suede Leather Coat by Pépin Designer Size L

This is a striking artisan suede leather coat by Réjean Pépin, a Quebec designer known for his sculptural outerwear created under the label “Pépin Designer Artisan”.  Pepin is located in Mont-Carmel, Quebec, but his atelier is closing or has already closed, marking the end of his line of one-of-a-kind, hand-finished pieces.

The coat is made of buttery-soft suede leather in a warm, slightly pinkish tone of brown. It features Pépin’s signature asymmetric patchwork construction with layered panels and hand-painted green and yellow brushstroke accents on the collar, sleeves, and hem. The collar can be worn folded or draped high (with the aid of a button) at the neck. It closes with two artisan-made sculptural buttons—each individually hand-shaped and embedded with mixed materials. The interior is the backing of the suede, which is smooth leather.  A coat of this type was quite expensive to buy new.

This is a statement artisan suede leather coat, meticulously crafted with an emphasis on texture, movement, and natural form—an excellent example of Quebec’s late 20th to early 21st century designer craftsmanship.

Age:  Difficult to date - Pepin was in business from about 1984, so this could have been made at any point as his items tended to be conceptually similar.  My best guess on this one would be 1990s.

Condition: This artisan suede leather coat is in very good pre-owned condition with the exception of wear to the collar (see close-up photos), probably caused by the strap of a shoulder bag. The painted accents and handmade buttons are intact and vibrant.
