This is a wonderful vintage hat designed by Adolfo Sardina under his Adolfo II label. Adolfo began his career as a milliner for Bergdorf Goodman in 1948 and apprenticed both at the House of Balenciaga and at Chanel during the 1950s. He started his own millinery in 1962 and eventually expanded his line to include women’s clothing, accessories and perfume. The Adolfo II label was introduced in 1963, but continued to be produced into the 1980s. Adolfo had a loyal following that included Nancy Reagan, C.Z. Guest and the Duchess of Windsor. This hat was most likely made during the 1980s and features a striking lacquered black straw. It is made in a wide brimmed form with low rounded crown that is decorated with black silk flowers. The opening measures 19 1/2” around and the hat measures 14” by 14 1/2” across the brim with a crown that measures about 2 1/2” in height. This should fit a size medium as the hat should sit on top of the head. It is in very good condition with no wear, tear, odors or soiling. The maker’s label reads “Adolfo II New York Paris...Gorgeous look!
