Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a vintage wool coat made by New York suit and coat manufacturer Zelinka Matlick during the 1960s. The coat is made in a black wool with a “burlap” finish, excellent quality. It is cut in a rather simple mod style with raglan sleeves, shirt style collar and vertical slit pockets built into either upper side, each with a decorative flap. The coat has a single button/loop closure at the neck, and otherwise has no other closure. It is fully lined in black acetate taffeta.

Age: 1960s

Manufacturer’s Label: Zelinka Matlick New York London Paris. David Zelinka and Max Matlick founded their company in 1935 and closed during the mid-1970s. They were known as one of the premier American suit and coat makers, often taking inspiration from Parisian designs. David Zelinka went on to become the chairman of the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Retailer’s label: Tailored Woman Fifth Avenue at Fifty Seventh St. New York.

Fabric: Wool, lightweight, suitable for fall wear.

Sizing: No size is indicated, but this should fit a large size, especially if you want to wear a sweater or suit underneath - please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the thickness of the wool and style of the coat into account:

Shoulders and sleeves: 29” from the neck to the cuff / Sleeve inseam: 17 1/2” / Bust: 45” / Waist: 47” / Hips: 48” / Length: 40”, measured flat

Condition: The coat is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, soiling or odor. The centre pleat at the back is becoming a little unstitched at the top, so should be secured, an easy fix. It has not been dry cleaned, so would benefit from a cleaning and pressing, although it is very wearable as is, with a steaming after being packaged.

This is a nice quality coat by a respected New York manufacturer.
