This is is an early 1980s era sweater designed by Sonia Rykiel, known as the “queen of the knits”. The sweater is made in black wool with violet purple stripes. It has shoulder pads, long sleeves and a tie at the neckline.  It has a fitted silhouette with elasticized bottom and cuffs.

Sizing: French size 42 is indicated but please note the following measurements, all measurements are given in inches.

Shoulders: 15”

Sleeves: 26 1/2” with cuff rolled down

Sleeve inseam: 19” with cuff rolled down

Bust: 34” unstretched, stretches out to 38”, comfortable fit would be somewhere in between

Waist: 28” unstretched, could stretch out to 32”

Overall Length: 28”

It is in very good condition and looks like it saw little use and was very well kept over the years.

Sonia Rykiel began designing in 1962 because she was pregnant and couldn’t find a sweater that would fit her properly. She started her business in 1965 and became noticed by Vogue magazine in 1967. She opened her flagship store in Paris in 1968. She passed away recently, on August the 25th.  She will be remembered both as the “Queen of Knitwear” and a true fashion innovator.
