Vintage 1980s Jean-Claude Poitras Coat Cheetah Print Velvet Sz L
This is a 1980s Jean-Claude Poitras coat made in a spotted cat printed velvet fabric in tones of black against bronze brown. This 1980s Jean-Claude Poitras coat is made in an oversized swing style, with large shoulder pads and dropped shoulders. It closes with two plastic buttons down the front, has a round “jewel” neckline and has a large fold-over flapped patch pocket at either side.
Label: Jean-Claude Poitras Design. Poitras opened his Poitras Design company in 1987, issuing his first women’s wear line in 1988. In 1990, he merged his company with Irving Samuel - the partnership only lasted until 1995. I think, due to the style of the piece and the history of Poitras design, that this coat dates just to around 1988-1989. Jean-Claude Poitras was quite prolific, designing under his own labels, and also for Montreal manufacturers Beverini, Auckie Sanft as well as Irving Samuel. Jean-Claude Poitras is the recipient of numerous design awards, the Order of Canada and the subject of a retrospective at the McCord Museum of Montreal.
