Vintage 1980s Artisan Brooch Molded Glass Polymer Clay Signed
Dating to the 1980s, this unusual artisan brooch combines a striking raspberry-red moulded glass centre with sage-green moulded composition and decorative gold-tone metalwork. The piece is hand-signed on the reverse, although the artist has not been identified.
The centre of the brooch is a large translucent raspberry-red moulded glass cabochon. The glass has an irregular geometric faceted pattern moulded into its surface, creating changing areas of pink, red, silvery-grey and violet as it catches the light.
The glass is surrounded by a wide sage-green decorative border, apparently made from polymer clay or a similar moulded composition material. The green material incorporates several different textures, including braided and fluted bands arranged concentrically around the glass.
Gold-tone metal elements are incorporated throughout the design, including circular bands, a twisted rope-style outer border and eight raised fan or shell-shaped ornaments spaced around the perimeter. The combination of moulded material, glass and applied metalwork gives the brooch a distinctive 1980s studio or wearable-art appearance.
The reverse has a mottled green and brown surface and is fitted with a metal pin and safety clasp. Some gold-coloured paint or overspray is visible on the green material, including on the reverse, and appears to be associated with the original decorative finishing of the brooch.
The brooch is signed by hand on the reverse in silver-coloured script. The signature appears possibly to read “Clo” or “Clot,” although the exact reading is uncertain and the artist has not been identified.
