Vintage 1970s Margaret Godfrey red leather jacket by Bagatelle Montreal with cropped mod revival silhouette and gold-tone crest buttons

Vintage 1970s Margaret Godfrey Leather Jacket Bagatelle Montreal Cropped Jacket Size 8

$95.00

This vintage Margaret Godfrey leather jacket was made in Canada by Bagatelle and dates to the mid-1970s. Crafted in soft red leather, it features a cropped silhouette, structured padded shoulders, front zip closure, decorative stitched detailing at the neckline and front placket, and gold-tone crest buttons at the chest tabs and cuffs.

The design reflects the British mod revival influence that carried into women’s fashion in the 1970s, combining clean lines, military-inspired details, and a structured shape. Margaret Godfrey was a British-born designer who worked in London’s fashion industry from 1962 to 1967 before relocating to Montreal. She first worked with Jonathan Logan and then joined the newly established Bagatelle in 1968, becoming a partner shortly thereafter. Her work in Montreal drew on the influence of British modernist fashion, adapted for the structured tailoring of the 1970s.

The jacket retains its ILGWU Canada union label, used from 1968 to 1984, and the CA number 00427 identifies Bagatelle as the manufacturer. Based on the cut, hardware, shoulder line, and overall styling, this jacket is best dated to the mid-1970s.

This is a distinctive vintage Canadian designer leather jacket with strong period character and an eye-catching colour.

Why This Piece Stands Out

This jacket brings together several desirable elements: Margaret Godfrey’s Montreal design history, Bagatelle production, British mod revival influence, and a strong cropped leather silhouette that feels both collectible and wearable. The gold-tone military-style buttons and stitched trim give it a polished, fashion-forward look typical of better Canadian designer clothing from the period.
