This is a 1970s era black velvet evening gown / dress made of a quality black velvet fabric. The dress was sold under the Lillie Rubin Collection 700 label - see further below for information on Lillie Rubin. The dress is made in a full length with cap sleeves and deep V shaped neckline. It has a defined waistline with a skirt that is gathered under the waistline so that it falls in drapes. It is fully lined and does up the back with a nylon zipper.
Label: Lillie Rubin. Lillie Rubin, founded in Miami in 1946, was a specialty shop that offered evening gowns and special occasion wear. They were bought by La Cache in 1990 and its stores converted to La Cache in 2006. (courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild label resource)
Material: Very nice quality velvet, very soft with good weight so that it falls beautifully. Without a burn test, it is difficult to know what type of velvet this is - I assume that it is a quality viscose velvet, but it is possible that it is a silk velvet as Lillie Rubin offered excellent quality.
Sizing: No size is indicated, and although this should fit a medium size, please note the following measurements for fit, taking into account the style of the dress:
Shoulders: 19” across, including the cap sleeves
Bust: 35” around, taken under the arm openings
Waist: 28” around
Hips: 42” around, meant to fall loosely in drapes
Length: 58” measured flat
Condition: It is in very condition with no wear, tear, stains or odour. This dress looks to have seen little use and has been well cared for over the years.
This is a beautiful evening dress - sophisticated, elegant and classic, wonderful gown for a formal occasion. Great dress for the classical musician!
