This is an Indian cotton gauze dress made in India during the 1970s. The fabric is printed in a pink tone of red, purple and white with metallic thread in alternating colours of red, blue, green and gold woven throughout the fabric. The bodice yoke and the bottom are printed with a floral branch design while the body of the dress is printed with a repeating white dot and arrow shaped motif and a repeating purple petal flower. The front has a notched neckline with four black rope ties at the neckline, the end of each tie decorated with two small glass beads - one of the ties is missing its beads however (see last close-up photo). The sleeves are made in a below-the-elbow length with a notch at the end - it appears that there had been ties to secure the cuff to the arm, but the original owner removed them, so the ends of the sleeves are loose and open (see second-to-last close-up photo). The dress is made of 100% cotton - the cotton is woven in a lightweight gauzy construction, rather translucent, great for summer wear. The dress is unlined and loose fitting.
Label: None. This was made at a time when often these type of Indian dresses were unbranded
Size: No size is indicated, but please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the style of the dress into account:
Shoulders: 17” across the yoke
Sleeves: 17 1/2” long from the shoulder/sleeve seam and 26” long from the mid-neck
Sleeve inseam: 14 1/2”
Bust: 44” around, taken under the armpits
Waist: 50" around, meant to fall loosely in drapes
Length: 51“, measured lying flat
Condition: Aside from the aforementioned missing beads and cuff ties, it is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, staining or odour - this looks to have seen little use and was well stored over the years.
This is a wonderful summer dress - very pretty pink toned colour, sure to be noticed!
