This is a striking 1970s evening gown hand printed in Italy by Pelilla. The pattern features figures around the bottom of the dress playing musical instruments, somewhat in the style of Aubrey Beardsley. The rest of the dress features a geometric pattern, and one might say that the pattern has one foot in the Art Deco and one foot in the Art Nouveau design movements, both of which had renewed interest during the 1970s. The print is signed "Pelilla" on the side figure. The dress has a high rounded neck, in solid green, as well as solid green cuffs. It is unlined, does up the back with a metal zipper, and is made in a full length. The dress is form fitting - due to the stretch of the fabric, it should hug the body, accentuating the silhouette.
Label: “a la Nouvelle Orleans” and “Printed by Hand Pelilla Made in Italy”. A la Nouvelle Orleans was a fashion boutique within the Eaton’s of Canada department store. In Montreal, keeping with the French character of Quebec, they used “A la Nouvelle Orleans”, while in the rest of Canada, the boutique was called “The New Orleans Townhouse”. The buyer for the boutique was Kathy Hill, who was of European origin, and for the boutique she sourced international/European pret-a-porter and designer labels such as Bill Blass, Mr Gilbert and Eloise Curtis. Pelilla specialized in these printed lamé fabrics - a similar example from the 1970s is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert museum.
Fabric label: 100% Lamé Made in Italy. The fabric is very lightweight and quite sheer, so is somewhat translucent - you should wear a slip underneath it.
Color: Gold and green
Sizing: Size 8 is indicated, and although this should fit a medium size, please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the stretch of the fabric into account:
Shoulders: 13 1/2” across seam-to-seam, but your shoulder cap should fit into the cap of the sleeve
Sleeves: 26” long from the shoulder seam
Sleeve inseam: 19”
Bust: 32” around unstretched, but stretches out to 36” if needed
Waist: 26” around, but stretches out
Hips: stretches out to 36” around
Overall length: 60”
Condition: It is in very good condition with the exception of one pinhead sized hole at the lower front (see last close-up photo) and a snag pull at the mid back, very minor. Really, the hole is very difficult to notice, so shouldn’t bother anyone too much. Otherwise, the dress is very clean and looks spectacular.
This is a fabulous dress - wonderful style and pattern, should gleam under lighting!
