This vintage 1970s coat by Primrose of Toronto under their Monteselli Original brand name is a striking example of mid-century Canadian boutique fashion. The coat features a bold geometric woven fabric in tones of brown, black, grey, and greyish white in a textured cotton and acetate blend. The textile has a graphic maze-like pattern typical of early 1970s modernist textile design.
The coat has a double-breasted front, wide lapel collar, straight cut body, and bracelet-length sleeves with cuff straps. It is fully lined in brown acetate and labeled Monteselli Original by Primrose of Toronto – Canada’s Fashion Centre, with the fabric label reading Reflets Couture Française Tissu Exclusif.
This coat would originally have been worn with a wide belt; one belt loop remains and the other loop and belt are no longer present. The top left button is missing but would normally be hidden under the lapel when worn and could be replaced if desired.
