This is a fabulous 60s era maxi dress designed by Annika Rimala in 1966 for Marimekko in the Keidas (Oasis) pattern.  The dress is made in a simple sleeveless long shift style with a quasi-tent flare.  The dress has a high rounded neckline at the front and a long V shaped opening at the back that closes with two ties at the back neck.  The pattern is in a cherry red tone against a white background with a few green accents at the bottom sides - nice touch!  The dress is unlined, stitch finished around the hemline and the cotton fabric is fairly lightweight - nice summer dress.

Marimekko was founded in 1951 Viljo and Armi Ratia.  Armi had artist friends submit designs for silkscreening and then had simple dresses made up to show how the designs could be used - this was an early recognition of the role that industrial design could have in marketing products.  Jackie Kennedy bought eight Marimekko dresses for use during the 1960 Presidential campaign and the company found commercial success with their bold colours and simple graphic designs.

Material: 100% Cotton

Waist: 35” around

Hips:  38” around, but meant to fall loosely

Overall length: 55", measured flat from the top to the hemline
