This is a vintage smoking jacket featuring a woven pattern consisting of a circular Chinese motif in yellow, violet, blue, dark brown and coral against a brown satin background. It has shawl lapels, turned cuffs and applied pockets to the left chest and at either side. All pockets have turned out flaps. The robe closes with a matching sash belt and is fully lined in brown twill.
Age: most likely early 1960s
Labels: Wong Sons Shanghai. The Chinese were exporting even during the 60s, but mostly to Canada and other countries as there was an American embargo on Chinese produced goods from 1950 until 1972. The Chinese produced very good quality then, especially in garments.
Material: No content label, but fabric is, I believe, rayon satin
Sizing: Size “40” is indicated, and although this should fit a medium size, please rely on the following measurements for fit:Shoulders: 18 1/2” across, from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 24” long form shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2” long
Chest: 40” around, taken under the arms, approximate, depending on overlap
Waist: 38” around, uncinched, but meant to be cinched with the belt
Overall length: 32”, measured flat
Condition: It is in excellent condition with no wear, tear, staining or odor - it looks like it saw no use. It might benefit from a professional pressing.
This is a very rich looking smoking jacket - sure to be noticed!
