This is an excellent quality 100% pure cashmere intarsia cardigan sweater made in Scotland for Holt Renfrew of Canada. I believe that it dates to the early 1960s. It is made in a tan beige colour with a lighter woven diamond patterning. It is made with a high rounded neckline with small collar and has mid-forearm length sleeves. It has an eight button front closure - the buttons are made of mother-of-pearl. It is unlined and the collar, cuffs and bottom are ribbed.
Label: Made in Scotland Exclusively for Holt Renfrew of Canada by Ballantyne 100% Pure Cashmere - the cashmere is very soft, as you would expect with older Scottish cashmere. There is a second label that reads “This is an original Ballantyne Intarsia”.
Sizing: No size is indicated, and although the lady from whom this was acquired wore a medium size, please rely on the following measurements for fit, considering the stretch of the knit:
Shoulders: 14” across, seam to seam
Sleeves: 17 1/2” from the shoulder seam
Sleeve inseam: 13”
Bust: 36” around, taken under the arms
Bottom: 25” around, unstretched, stretches out to 30” max - it has a ribbed bottom
Overall length: 18 1/2”, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, holes or other defect except for a missing female snap at the neck (the male is visible in the photos). I haven’t replaced it as you may want to remove the male part, or place the female to fit your neck.
This is a lovely quality cashmere sweater - beautiful intarsia pattern, modern cashmere just doesn’t compare…..
