Vintage 1960s 1970s Men's Blue Pinstripe Wool Suit – Beacon Hill Clothes
This is a vintage men's two-piece suit dating to the late 1960s or early 1970s, labelled Beacon Hill Clothes and tailored from Weston Park Imperial Loomed fabric with a distinctive Perma Sheen finish.
The suit is made from deep blue fabric with closely spaced, fine vertical pinstripes in subtly contrasting shades of blue, maroon and green, with yellow threading. The fabric has a smooth surface with a lustrous sheen that changes slightly with the light, giving the suit an attractive tonal appearance. The material is believed to be wool, although there is no fibre-content label to confirm its composition.
The single-breasted jacket features narrow, high-set notched lapels, a two-button front fastening and structured shoulders. It has a welted breast pocket, two lower horizontal welt pockets with dark contrasting trim and long sleeves finished with buttons at the cuffs. The jacket is half-lined in dark blue patterned fabric and features a centre-back vent.
The matching trousers have a flat front, a waistband with belt loops, slanted side pockets and two rear welt pockets, one with a button fastening. The legs have a straight, moderately tapered silhouette and plain, uncuffed hems. There is approximately 2¾ inches of additional fabric inside the trouser hems, allowing for possible lengthening.
The jacket bears two original labels. The Beacon Hill Clothes label identifies the clothing brand, while the Weston Parkfabric label reads Imperial Loomed, Perma Sheen Finish, "Decatized" for Wear. Decatizing is a textile finishing process traditionally associated with wool suiting, using heat, moisture and pressure to stabilize the fabric and improve its surface appearance and drape.
The relatively narrow, high-set lapels, restrained two-button tailoring and straight, moderately tapered trousers are characteristic of men's fashions during the transition from the late 1960s into the early 1970s.
