Vintage 1950s Pierre Rhinestone Brooch Frosted Glass Aurora Borealis 2 1/4"

Dating to the late 1950s, possibly early 60s, this vintage Pierre rhinestone brooch features an elaborate openwork floral or snowflake design combining frosted glass navettes with colourful aurora borealis rhinestones. The brooch is signed “Pierre” on an applied oval plaque on the reverse.

Pierre is a relatively little-documented maker of mid-century costume jewellery. Signed Pierre jewellery is encountered in Canada and the maker is generally associated with Canadian costume jewellery, although comparatively little information about the company appears to have survived. Their jewellery is notable for its quality of construction and use of elaborate rhinestone settings, somewhat in the tradition of other Canadian rhinestone jewellery manufacturers of the period such as Sherman and Continental.

The brooch is composed of large frosted silvery-greyish-white glass navette stones, surrounded by numerous smaller faceted aurora borealis rhinestones. The AB stones reflect shades of blue, green, violet, gold and smoky grey depending upon the angle and lighting.

The stones are individually prong-set in a dark silver/rhodium-tone metal setting. A large faceted aurora borealis rhinestone forms the centre, with the navette stones and smaller rhinestones radiating outward in an intricate layered arrangement.

The reverse is fitted with a traditional pin and rollover safety clasp and bears the raised script “Pierre” signature.
