Vintage 1950s New York Thruway Souvenir Scarf Map Square 29 x 28.5 Americana

$65.00

This is a vintage late 1950s souvenir scarf featuring a colourful illustrated map of New York State centred on the New York Thruway, one of the most important highway projects of the postwar era.

The design places a bright yellow map of New York against a vivid red ground, with towns, cities, and regional attractions depicted through small illustrated vignettes. Surrounding the map is a decorative border of scenic panels showing Thruway landmarks and roadside features, including bridges, toll gates, and travel stops. The slogan “Thruway – The Main Street of the Empire State” appears prominently, reflecting its role as a promotional piece tied to mid-century automobile tourism.

Details within the design—including the presence of the Tappan Zee Bridge (opened 1955) and a nearly complete Buffalo-to-New York City route—indicate production shortly after the Thruway system was completed, placing this scarf in the late 1950s.

The original tag reads “Momme 77% Rayon 23% Silk Chief Value Silk – Hand Rolled – Japan RN 22088,”.
