This is a fabulous pair of 1950s bombshell cigarette or capri style pants, made by Paris designer Jacques Maraut. The pants are made of a black fabric that is woven with a Greek Key pattern - I think that the fabric is silk, given the weave, difficult to see what else it would be . You can almost picture a 1950s bombshell girl in these - Jayne Mansfield comes to mind. They do up with a metal zipper at the front and have a two button closure at the waistline. There are no loops for a belt and no pockets. They are fully lined in what I think is acetate.
Age: 1950s, possibly early 60s.
Label: Jacques Maraut Paris 175 Bd Pereire. Jacques Maraut designed and marketed mostly sports wear - ski wear, swim and beach wear and hiking wear. I’ve been able to find old advertisements dating to the 1940s and 50s and I found evidence that they were in business as late as 1965.
Size: The size label reads “38”, which is a French size that I believe is now equivalent to a US size 8, but definitely smaller than that, certainly a size small or XS. Being a vintage size, please rely on the following measurements for fit taking the style of the pants into account:
Waist: 24" around
Hips: 34” around
Leg Inseam: 28” long
Length: 39", measured lying flat
Condition: They are in very clean condition with no stains, wear or tear. This pair of pants looks to have seen little, if any, use and was well cared for over the years.
This is a rare pair of pants, seldom seen - I previously had a blue lamé pair of capri pants by Jacques Maraut that were incredible, but these are sexy in their own right. Wonderful period styling by a Parisian maker!
