This is a vintage hat from the 1950s made of a beautiful quality panne black velvet. The hat has a bow and horizontal pleating at the front that is decorated with black bugle beads in a "branch" form.

Age: late 1950s / early 1960s

Label: AMY New York. Frances Kleinfeld (1909-1974) and her husband, Walter Nelkin established a hat business during the 1930s, using "Frances and Walter Nelkin" as their label. It is purported that the Amy label was used for their more "popular priced line", but this is a very nice quality hat, so I'm not sure.

The opening measures 21 1/4" around, which normally would be a size 6 7/8, but this hat is designed to sit on the top of the head, so it should fit a range of small to medium sizes. The hat is in very good condition with no pronounced wear.

 

This is a very nice quality hat - New York sophistication transplanted from the 50s to today......

Poppy's Vintage item came beautifully wrapped

Poppy's Vintage item came beautifully wrapped in black and red tissue matching the black velvet with red rhinestone pillbox I purchased. A personal note thanked me for my purchase. The 65 year old hat is in immaculate condition. It feels like a gift from heaven. The designer, my mom, died 35 years ago but I remember the workrooms, the jars where the stones were stored by a French assistant named Colette who also owned a pet monkey she brought once a year. Thank you so much for your integrity
