This is a rare ashtray used at the famous Joe Marshs Spindletop Restaurant located in the heart of the theatrical district at 224 West 49th Street at 7th Avenue in New York City. The Spindletop was known for its delicious steaks and salads and is documented as the restaurant that Roger Maris went to supper at after hitting his record breaking 61st home run on October 1st 1961. It is reported that he ate a steak that was the size of Yogi Berras mitt. Celebrities, from Ava Gardner to Sammy Davis Jr, would eat there as did Joe Gallo, who was the Caporegime of the Colombo crime family. One night, while Phil Spector and Doc Pomus were eating supper, someone sitting next to them was the victim of a mob hit. The ashtray is made of a type of black bakelite plastic and measures 4 1/4 in diameter. The underside of the ashtray is marked with Eagle 3 Stay-Safe Made in U.S.A.. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or pronounced wear. This appears to be a rather rare piece as I couldnt find another example - great addition to a collection of New York or restaurant collectibles!
