Vintage 1940s Smoking Jacket Maroon Deco Bonnington by HV Cowie Size L

This is a wonderful vintage 1940s smoking jacket made by H.V. Cowie of Toronto under their “Bonnington” brand name.  This smoking jacket is made in a very attractive maroon colour, a somewhat purplish red, that is woven with an Art Deco-influenced geometric pattern throughout.  It has a shawl collar, a patch pocket at either side and one at the left chest.  The shoulders are padded in typical 1940s fashion.  It closes at the waist with a matching sash belt.  It is lined in a matching coloured fabric.

Fabric:  Rayon or rayon/acetate jacquard satin

Label: Bonnington Tailored by The H.V. Cowie Co. Limited - the neck loop reads Bonnington Reg’d Tailored by H.V. Cowie Co Limited.  Cowie was founded in 1922 by Hedley Vicars Cowie and specialized in manufacturing and importing menswear.  Bonnington was registered as a brand in 1945.  The company declined after H.V. Cowie’s death in 1965 and the plant was sold in 1967, although they continued activity as an importer until dissolution in 2008. 

Sizing:  Size L is indicated, but please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders: 19” across seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 25” long

Sleeve Inseam: 22”

Chest: 50”, taken under the arms

Waist: 50” around, meant to be cinched with the belt

Overall length: 34 1/2“, measured flat at the back from the neck seam

Condition: In very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, soiling, staining or odour.  Of course, a dry cleaning and professional pressing would be beneficial 

This is a wonderful smoking jacket, becoming very difficult to find good examples like this - classy look!
