Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a vintage 1940s black satin robe made by Southern California Fashions. This vintage 1940s black satin robe has red piping along the collar, cuffs, and pocket edges. It features padded shoulders, a shawl collar, a patch pocket at the right hip, and closes with a matching self-tie belt at the waist as well as a hook and eye at the waist and interior ties.  The standout detail of this vintage 1940s black satin robe is the large red embroidered dragon on the back, with a smaller matching motif on the lower front right side.

Label: Southern California Fashions – this label was used by a regional California maker active in the mid-20th century, specializing in loungewear and resort wear.

Material: Not labeled, but typical of the period, this appears to be a rayon satin.

Sizing: No size is indicated, but this vintage 1940s black satin robe should fit a women's size medium. Please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders: 14 1/2“ across seam-to-seam

Sleeves:  23 1/2”

Sleeve inseam:  16 1/2”

Chest: 37" around, taken under the arms

Waist: 26”

Hips: Full

Overall length: 57"

Condition: This vintage 1940s black satin robe is in very good condition. The satin has a couple of tiny snags at the back (see last close-up photo) and the female half of the hook at the waist needs a stitch to be re-secured, a minor repair for a seamstress, both minor issues. It would benefit from a careful pressing (no direct iron), but otherwise, is in great shape.

This is a striking vintage 1940s black satin robe with midcentury styling and classic Asian-inspired embroidery, typical of postwar American loungewear - not often seen!
