This is a wonderful 1940s era overcoat made of wool gabardine. The coat has notched lapels and padded shoulders. It closes with three plastic buttons down the front. The coat has a flapped patch pocket built onto either side. The back has a 17” kick vent at the bottom center. It is fully lined in a grey satin fabric and it also has a zip-in quilted and wool lining for extra warmth, if needed.
Age: 1940s
Label: Croydon with an airplane graphic on the zip-in lining and Croydon with a lion and multiple airplanes on the coat lining. Croydon was a Canadian manufacturer of coats and was a supplier of coats to the Canadian military during WWII. It was based in Montreal and founded in 1933. I don’t think that this was meant as a military issue, but the airplane graphics are a link to Croydon’s military supplier status.
Color: Navy blue in a slightly purply tone
Material: Wool gabardine in a heavier weight, very nice quality
Sizing: No size is indicated, but this should fit a large size, probably size 42, maybe a 44 - please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the fabric and the cut of the garment into consideration):
Shoulders: 19 1/2” across shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 25” from shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17” long
Chest: 47” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 47” around
Overall length: 44", measured flat
Condition: This coat is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, staining or odors - the only defects are a pinhead sized wear hole at the back under the collar and a smaller one under the right lapel, both very minor and easily repaired with a couple of stitches (see last two close-up photos). In addition, there is a repair to the lining at the kick vent (see third to last photo). Otherwise, this coat has been very well preserved - unusual to find pieces like this in such great condition these days.
This is a great WWII era coat - wonderful 40s style and fabric!
